Associate Editor Reviews

What is it like working as an Associate Editor?

March 2023
I like working there, everyone is super nice and the workload is fine.
Associate Editor in Akron:
Pros: I get to hold a number of different roles and responsibilities.
Cons: The pay.
December 2020
Quickly expanding company with lots of opportunity for growth/advancement.
Associate Editor in New York:
Pros: I like how flexible the company seems to be in offering several chances to explore different skills, teams, and chances to manage various projects. I also love all the internal programs BI uses to support employees (mentorships, career workshops, etc..).
Cons: The downside to being at a quickly growing company is that policies and the organization of teams can get nebulous and harder to navigate. Even with the org chart and all its resources, I'm finding it hard to know where I stand in the company and what exactly are my options for the near future in terms of promotion, raises, job description, etc...
February 2020
Not the best, not the worst.
Associate Editor in Minneapolis:
Pros: The work. I love magazines and editorial and being in a creative field working with talented people.
Cons: It takes a while to grow. There's politics involved. You need to remind managers to give you feedback and people get fired often.
September 2019
Great.
Associate Editor in New York:
Pros: Everybody is great
Cons: nothing
July 2019
I’m currently working as a freelancer, so the title hasn’t been made official yet, but I do all the work and am granted the access of one. I hope the hours and pay will grow as the publication does.
Associate Editor in Chicago:
Pros: The access to free music and the ability to edit other people’s work. I absolutely love my job.
Cons: Communication as a staff still needs improvement. The publication is new and needs to stabilize in certain ways as it grows as well.
January 2019
Associate Editor in Portland:
Pros: Portland's general tendency to fall on the blue side of politics and be vocal about injustices...as long as it doesn't disrupt their day.
Cons: The racism and complacence in dealing with it.
November 2018
Mixed reviews.
Associate Editor in Helena:
Pros: Helena is a great little city if you like quiet towns and opportunities to get outside and hike.
Cons: State employment is always a challenge, particularly when the state legislature keeps cutting workers' salaries while increasing their own.
