Librarian Reviews

What is it like working as a Librarian?

May 2016
Being a Librarian is NOT a Extra Job for Buying Purses.
Librarian:
Those interested in pursuing a satisfying career in helping people locate information and entertainment needs must realize that local boards are often made up of individuals who are one to two generations removed. As such, they feel that being a librarian is a privilege for young women who are looking for extra income to buy nice outfits and shoes and purses. THIS is not the case. Every librarian I know works hard to serve the public through locating information and sources, while keeping a quiet smile on their face. There are reports to file and programs to schedule and conduct. We are providing much needed income for our families. In recent years, more and more males have come into the field. With luck, this may mean wages will be adjusted. However, most males are hired to administrate the workers. Those in the field need to help boards understand that we need benefits; that we are NOT dependent upon husbands to meet deficits in pays and benefits.

Do not seek the MLIS.
Librarian:
The market is saturated with part time jobs that do not provide a living wage and full of loud, overachieving candidates. You're better off staying a paraprofessional without acquiring additional student debt.
