Wound Care Nurse Reviews

What is it like working as a Wound Care Nurse?

August 2016
I call my patients the day before to confirm the time I will.
Wound Care Nurse:
Pros: My patients are in the comfort of their own home, they do not have to go to ambulatory care for wound care. This is essential as most are in pain and some have just been released from hospital, especially after a grueling surgery, mastectomy , for example. We give them an hour and ensure all questions are answered, as this is important for their healing. Education on wound care, catheter care for an example, are essential so that some may look after themselves after that. We order the supplies needed, we can call a co worker if needed for advise, we can ask for OT, PT, NP or a wound care specialist.
Cons: Since March, the cutbacks in home care have been cut in half. They are sending all kinds of people to the ambulatory clinic at the hospital. They send elderly people, people who have just had surgery, and are not allowed to drive. They are told to take a cab, bus or ask their working children to pick them up and drive them there and back. One case manager told me to tell the 78 year old women to push her 77 year old husband in a wheelchair from the parking lot to the clinic. Unbelievable. We are not treated with respect, we do not receive benefits and the staff in the office do, for instance. We only receive 38 cents a klm and do not get paid for all the office work we have to do. Careplans are done manually and are time consuming. I was in the office yesterday for 3.5 hours, and I was paid 38 cents. Management is pushing me to take a dialysis and IV course, but I do not get recognized for this extra skill, money wise.
